- Conception
This is where I'll record the steps of the conception stage.
2004-07-07 - Oh well...
Unfortunatly, my procrastination has gotten the better of me. I could still start now and finish in time, but it wouldn't be the quality I would like to enter in the contest with. Oh well, untill next year then. In the mean time, I'll try to attend the contest but not really compete, cheer on each and every lovely contestant, and get some kind of idea of what the experience is like of being a Dawn. Good luck and see you on the other side next year. Go 2005!
2004-03-13 - brief update
Been a slow time for the dress since I've been extremely busy on other fronts. However, I have had two strings of good luck, so I thought I'd go ahead and share them.First off, I went to the fabric store and found the (almost) perfect blue pvc. It's a little darker then I'd prefer, but it's definately the best I'm going to get. Besides, it's the perfect color under bright lights. It is viened like real hide though, but that's starting to grow on me. Here's the photos of the swatch I got, first with the flash, and second is without.
I've also found the absolutely perfect earrings! They're real metal, originally cheep pendants, and all they need is some matching hoop earrings to hang them from then they are done. I couldn't believe my luck, I wasn't even looking for them, and there they were. I have noticed that in some of the reference images, however, that they are pointed instead of rounded, but in most they are rounded so I'm keeping these.
2004-02-23 - it's here
It's here! It's here. Got "Lucifer's Halo" trade paperback in the mail today from Linsner.com and needless to say I jumped for joy. I forgot how much I loved the actual comic book itself... in addition to Dawn herself. And it's signed! I didn't realize it would be signed. Check it out:
Photographed every shot with the dress... That's right, photo. Even though it's paperback, it's one edition and sealed together instead of stapled, so I can't exactly take it appart, scan it, then put it back together. That's ok though, just means the pics are a little blurry. I got the hard copy, that's what matters. They're all in the Reference page. I'll be doing some sketching next. Get this planning out of my system before I find something else to get done costuming wise. Besides, I do have until September!
2004-02-21 - in the beginning...
Just opened and started the site, so I'm at square one... Literally. I guess I should start on why I'm doing this: 1) After attending Dragoncon last year, and having the absolute best time of my life I knew I wanted to do more next time. 2) Wether you're wearing jeans and a wig, or an amazing hand stitched dress and bleached blonde hair... if you're Dawn, you are laterally a Goddess at the con. 3) The subtext of "Dawn: Lucifer's Halo", and the scenes where she wears the dress itself just take my breath away. It's things like that I love being a geek for. Seems silly and confusing, but it makes sense to me. :) Maybe I'll go more in depth of the why later and give it it's own page. But until then, let's get started! On January 30th I ordered "Lucifer's Halo" Trade Paperback from Linsner.com for research and reference. Oh, and it'll probably end up being the most important part of this process. The site says it should arrive within 4 - 6 weeks. Waiting patiently... I've set aside 3 disks for the sole purpose of photographing this process. This is going to be my newest costume masterpiece, replacing my Carmilla dress. That and with this website it will be my first "real" costuming project. A functional, accurate, and flattering costume dress. Lastly, I've started a hard copy binder for my own reference and sketch purposes. I'm constantly sketching during the creative process, and I hope to scan most sketches and post them here... as long as they make sense. This is going to be a long process, with lots of breaks between working I'm sure, so I'll be sure and post on my regular diary if I've updated here in some way. I'm definitely looking forward to this.
